Post 4- Midpoint Reflection

My internship is at Brooklyn Children’s Museum. I always wanted to work with kids and that’s what I told my teachers. At Brooklyn Children’s Museum, I work with kids from 18 months to 5 years old. The fact that I get to work with kids makes this internship similar to my expectations but the fact that I can not take care of them or hold them makes it a little different from my expectations. At my internship, I work in Art Studio where I help kids with different activities that this place provides for kids everyday. Kids that come here remind me of the students from IHS-L because they are from different countries, different cultures and different ethnic groups. That’s what makes it similar to the environment of IHS-L.  But kids at my internship, even though they are originally from different countries and have different backgrounds, they all were born here and speak English perfectly, something that makes a difference between my internship and IHS-L. Also, at my internship, my only responsibility that I have is to stay at the Art Studio until 3:30 and help kids with what they need, but at IHS-L, I always have different responsibilities and assignments that I have to finish. Working at this internship has helped me a lot because everyone who works there is just so experienced and you can learn a lot from them. Since I always wanted to work with kids, this internship taught me on how to handle them well and how to work with them in the best way possible. This is a skill that I will need for my whole life if I ever want to get a job similar to my internship or even like a teacher. Also, this internship is improving my communication skills because since my supervisor told me to talk to at least one unfamiliar person each day, that is making me more confident on talking to other people, being more friendly but also is improving my communication skills and my English as well. People that work there are very friendly and that makes it very easy to work with them. Everyone is just like a family there and now I feel like I am part of that family. As for my supervisor, her good-natured personality makes our intern-mentor relationship more easy to handle. Also, this internship interacted me with a lot of professional adults but as I said that this internship improved my communication skills, I’ve grown a lot on interacting with professional adults as well and that is by communicating with them. Before I started my internship, my English was not that good but now, since I started my internship, Is very obvious that my English is improved and even though I didn’t learn big, hard, professional words, I learned the basic ones and I think that’s enough for now. Everyday at my internship, I have to welcome the parents and kids that come there and to be friendly with them. I have to answer parents questions, give kids whatever they ask and I think that is making me more active and less passive. Also, by trying to do all these things and also other things that my supervisor or other co-workers ask me to do, I think I’m being more independent and I’m gaining confidence. Working at this internship of course that has its own challenges. One challenge that I faced during this internship was getting to meet new people and also speaking English to people who speak perfect English. This is what I consider a challenge but of course that as the time passed, this challenge started to vanish because I had to do these things everyday which means that I had to face this challenge everyday and that was a good thing because I learned from it.Since there are five more weeks until this internship ends, two goals that I would like to accomplish are: gaining more experience on working with kids and improving my language skills. By going to this internship, I learned and I saw different neighborhoods that I never saw before but I also learned how to use the train when I’m alone.

Children's are the world's peace and their innocence and bright heart doesn't look at the differences between each one of them.
