Post 2-Interview with my supervisor, Delia Meza.

My supervisor's name is Delia Meza and she is originally from Mexico but she was born in New York (NY). She works as an Early Childhood Educator at Brooklyn Children's Museum.

How long have you lived in New York?
I was born here in New York in Bronx which means that I've been here for almost 31 years.

Where did you to go to high school? What kind of student were you in high school? What were your favorite classes/least favorite? What sports and extracurricular activities did you do?
I went to 2 different high schools. One was "Graphic Communication Arts" in Manhattan and the other one was "City as School" high school. I was not a good student at all. My favorite subjects were English and Science and my least favorite subject was Math. The extracurricular activities that i was part of were School Newspaper and Air Force ROTS.

Did you go to college? Graduate school? If so, where? For how long? What degree(s) did you earn? Are you interested in going back to school? If so, what do you plan to study?
I went to college for forensic sociology and I earned Associate degree. Then, for bachelor degree and now again for my second bachelor degree. I went to college 3 times and it took me 8 years from associate to bachelor degree.I went to college of Staten Island and than to John J college for Criminal Justice.

How did you choose your current occupation?
It started as an internship and I interned at "City as School" high school. I liked working with kids and I wanted to continue doing it.

What steps did you take to get this job? How did you learn about it? How many interviews did you have? Was the hiring process difficult, not difficult? If a person were looking for a job at your company, what advice would you offer?
Being in a strong internship is very helpful. I learned from using different websites, asking other museum educators and as long as you know more than two people, that will help you learn more. I had to do 2 interviews in 2 different places in order to get this job. The hiring process was a little difficult. First, I had to do an interview with my boss and than I had to do a demonstration for my boss and my other managers. 
I would tell people that this is a very good place to start off your career, rewards are focus, dedicated and make sure that you really want to do it.

How long have you worked here? Have you worked in different capacities at this job? What jobs at this company have you done in addition to the one you do now?
I've been working here for 5 years. I have actually. I am an assistant manager for Early Childhood department, after school teacher, write reports and also grants for the museum.

What is your job title and what are the three tasks and responsibilities you do most often?
My job title is the lead of Early Childhood educator and I am responsible to teach school class program and public programs.

Did you work somewhere else before this job? Where? For how long? How was that job similar or different?
Yes, I did. I worked in San Francisco, California, and I worked in an aquarium called the "Aquarium of the Bay" for a year. This job was a little different from the one that I'm doing now because there, I was teaching kids about Marine Biology, fish and here, I teach kids about snakes, cockroach and other animals. 

Who is your direct supervisor and what is her/his job title? How much do you interact with him/her on a weekly basis? How many people do you supervise?
My direct supervisor is Juliet Gray Moliere and she is the manager of Early Childhood Education department. In one week, I interact with her a total of 1 or 2 hours a week, I don't see her that often.
I supervise about 10 people.

What are two examples of challenges you face working here?
One challenge is teaching kids that don't want to pay attention and also communication with other departments.

What is the best part of your job?
The best part of my job are kids and also that I got something that I always wanted to do. Working with kids.

What advice would you give to teenage interns (such as myself) getting ready for college? 
I would say definitely go to college and definitely stay focused and do good because you will not be able to do something that you want to do.

What advice would you give to teenage (such as myself) preparing to find a career?
Do something that you enjoy and it's okay to change your mind about careers because you have to live a little before you choose. Do whatever you are interested in.

Post 1-First Impression

My supervisor's name is Delia Meza and she is an Early Childhood Educator at Brooklyn Children's Museum. At Brooklyn Children's Museum is an area that is called "Totally Tots" where my supervisor works and which is open for kids from 18 months-5 years old.
My supervisor is very nice, she is very friendly, cheerful, kind, creative but also very patient person.
The place where I work is very different from our school. This area is filled with toys and with different fun stuff for kids to play. Walls are colorful and very creative with different designs on them. Even though is a kids museum and is supposed to be very loud, this museum is very different and quite. This museum contains a water area, a quite book area for kids to relax and read something, a green garden which is full of fake trees and also real animals, a beach area in which you can walk with a feeling like you are on the beach and that's because when you walk in the "museum beach," there are speakers that make the sound that inform you that the waves are coming and also the seagulls which are a sign that inform you like you are on the beach.
Here at Brooklyn Children's Museum, there are other interns who work with me like Jensy, but also other people that work there or just volunteer. I also see my my mentor very often and her supervisor. My mentor's supervisor is a little strict and she want everything to be perfect, but otherwise, she is very nice and very respectful to the interns.
So far, in my internship, I practiced on how to read a children's book in order to make it more interesting but I also had to face my fear by touching snakes, turtles, cockroaches and also a seastar. Even though it was scary, i think it was a really big task that i accomplished.
My exact schedule of the internship is Thursday to Friday from 2 p.m to 5 p.m except on Fridays is until 5:30 p.m. Usually, I arrive home at 6:30 p.m except on Fridays on 7 p.m because I work a little later than the other days.
During my internship, I learned a very interesting fact about this museum. Brooklyn Children's Museum was the first museum that was open for kids in 1899 and all started when a woman was collecting toys and opening her hours for kids to play there everyday. Even though these days are a lot of children's museums, for my opinion, this is a museum that has its own beauty and perfection.
